The article that I choose to read was “Mental Illness in the 19th Century” written by Carrie Hughes. The article talks about how people began to blamed witchcraft and demonic possession for starting mental illness. This began to make people put into jail, sent to alms houses, or to remain home without any treatment. During the late 18th century moral treatment began to be the most common treatment in the United States. Doctors started moving patients to suitable areas where they could become healthier. After that, overcrowded hospitals caused treatments to be on hold as where the ill continued to get worse.Which wasn't right.
The central point of this article was to show you how doctors now a day treat patients differently then how they have treated patients in the old days. It also, explains the difference of cures that they were lacking to cure the ill. Last but not least, it showed the lack of care that humans had against the mentally ill it was just the way Hitler treated the Jews and homosexual (meaning he had a lack of care to them just the way humans had a lack of care towards the mentally ill) .
My reaction towards this article was that I felt that the doctors did nothing for their patients the ones who had this mental illness. I also felt terrible because many of methods the treatment was suppose to provide didn't heal the ill. the doctors back then were just careless about the mentally ill.
